One of the perks of being an NJEA member is access to our Member Benefits partners. The programs offered are designed to save you money and increase buying power. The NJEA Member Benefits program can help members looking for insurance, find big-ticket items at outstanding prices, or just find a special deal on an everyday purchase. Below are just a few of our early career members’ favorite ways to save money. Learn about all the resources available to you through NJEA Member Benefits by visiting njea.org/memberbenefits.

Our most valuable member benefits come from The Buyer’s Edge. You’re guaranteed to get the most bang for your buck with the tri-state area’s premier buying service. What does a “buying service” mean?
With The Buyer’s Edge you’ll get the lowest prices on most “big ticket” purchases, including major appliances/TVs, furniture, kitchens, luggage, fine jewelry, audio, travel, and much more – even cars.
To take advantage of The Buyer’s Edge, shop around and find what you want. Be sure that you know the manufacturer and model number.
Once you’re ready, call the appropriate phone number to speak with a specialist who has product and service expertise, knows inventory availability, and can arrange delivery right to your home. You can find the phone number you need on the Buyer’s Edge website – buyersedgeinc.com. You’ll need NJEA’s special username and password to access the great deals. Your local president can share this with you, or find it by signing in to njea.org/memberbenefits. Need help? Email Phil Lomonico at email@example.com.
To recap, Buyer’s Edge guarantees you the lowest prices on most major purchases, saves you time and money, and allows you to take advantage of advertised sales and discounts that you never knew existed.
Members have these things to say about using The Buyer’s Edge:
- “I have used The Buyer’s Edge for many years, taking full advantage of some of the financial benefits provided to me for being an NJEA member. With The Buyer’s Edge, I have rented a car for a road trip from New Jersey to Florida, bought a dishwasher almost at cost, bought a television set almost at cost, and much more. The list of discounted purchases that can be made through Buyer’s Edge is very broad and extensive. You can find discounts on cars, computers, major appliances, mattresses, furniture, contact lenses, carpeting, travel, and much more! I often have conversations with colleagues who never considered using it for certain purchases. I have first hand experience with The Buyer’s Edge and strongly recommend anyone in education to use it to it’s fullest potential.” Josh Eckersley, Central Regional Education Association
- “By using Buyer’s Edge, I saved over $300 on a stand alone freezer. They beat the sale price in the 30 days before and after my purchase also!” Allyson Pontier, Lodi Education Association
New Jersey teachers receive a minimum of ten sick days per year as a part of state statute. You do not; however, receive sufficient disability insurance. Prudential Insurance is the provider of the NJEA-endorsed disability insurance program.
Prudential offers disability insurance to protect the income of NJEA members like you who may run out of sick leave due to the inability to work.
Disability insurance pays a benefit when you cannot work because of covered illness, injury, or pregnancy.
These benefits can help you with the everyday bills that you must continue to pay even when you can’t work – expenses that health insurance won’t cover.
There are three levels offered: short-term for up to six months, short-term for up to two years, and long-term up to age 65.
You are guaranteed acceptance if you enroll during the first 120 days of NJEA membership, during the first 60 days after an enrollment meeting at your school, or during the first 90 days after you return from unpaid leave of one year or less.
The 120 day enrollment period is important because you won’t need to answer any health-related questions. You are guaranteed acceptance during this time.
Many members do not think they need disability insurance – that it is an extra unneeded deduction from their paychecks. You’ll be thankful you have it when you need it, and you never know when you’ll need it.

Auto and home insurance
NJEA partners with auto and home insurance companies to provide you with savings on your insurance needs.
Another insurance partner is California Casualty. They offer auto insurance with benefits. If your vehicle is vandalized or involved in a collision on school property, your deductible is waived. Members save an average of $443 per year on auto insurance with California Casualty.

Members have these things to say about California Casualty:
- “After years of seeing California Casualty at various NJEA functions, I decided to request a car insurance quote. At the time I had New Jersey Manufacturers (which is a great company with great prices). Well, I saved nearly $1000 with California Casualty on car insurance alone. I have yet to move homeowners, but I have the quote and will save another $600 by switching!” Allyson Pontier, Lodi Education Association
