The Valentine’s Day-themed event asked members to share their love for their union by bringing a new member with them. Attendees were welcomed to The Alementary with a meal, courtesy of the Good Mood Food Truck, as well as a bag containing NJEA Member Benefits information.
Over 50 early career NJEA members attended a first time homebuyers event that was held on Saturday, Feb. 4 at The Chandelier in Bayonne. The event drew participants from all over the northern region of the state and as far south as Ocean County.
Gene Woods, a history teacher at Bayonne High School, welcomed members and served as facilitator for the event. Gene began the event by informing members about their NJEA Member Benefits, which are accessible on njea.org/memberbenefits.
On Friday, Jan. 6, some 50 NJEA members attended a networking event for early career members. The event was one of several held recently by #teamnorth — a group of connected early career NJEA members working and living in the northern counties of the state. The event was first announced on the events page.
NJEA early career member Gabe Tanglao was the keynote speaker at the Massachusetts Education Association’s 2016 Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee Conference. Gabe is the Treasurer of the Bergenfield Education Association in Bergen County, where he teaches Economics. After presenting the keynote speech, Gabe hosted a World Cafe titled “Real Talk With Emerging Leaders.” Gabe learned Art of Hosting techniques such as the World Cafe through his work with the NJEA early career member network.

On Friday, September 16, 60 early career NJEA members attended #teamnorth’s first event of the year at Alementary in Hackensack. The event was first announced here on the events page of njea.org/earlycareermembers.
Jaime Valente, President of the Teaneck Community Charter Education Association, developed an innovative networking activity involving customized name tags for participants, each of which contained a different acronym that is commonly found on members’ paycheck stubs. Members also participated in a “Paycheck Go!” networking activity.
Gabe Tanglao of the Bergenfield Education Association made a brief presentation around an acronym he created for the word CASH: “Correct salary,” “Additional deductions,” “State pension,” Health contributions.”
Instructions for logging into the Member Benefits Online System (MBOS) were briefly detailed for members with instructional sheets available.
