On Friday, Jan. 6, some 50 NJEA members attended a networking event for early career members. The event was one of several held recently by #teamnorth — a group of connected early career NJEA members working and living in the northern counties of the state. The event was first announced on the events page.
On Wednesday, Oct. 26, some 25 NJEA members came together for a conversation around the importance of political action. The event was first announced here on njea.org/earlycareermembers and saw preservice, early career, mid-career, veteran, and retired members attend. Two NJEA members who hold public office were among the attendees and offered inspiring words to the group.
Gabe Tanglao is an early career NJEA member and part of #teamnorth. He is the Treasurer of the Bergenfield Education Association. Read his Open Letter to Millennial Educators here on aamunite.org.
ADDED ON OCT. 19: Gabe’s article has since been published on NEA’s Education Votes site, here.
The event lives here: earlycareer.njeasites.org/event/connectionwithyourpeersaroundpoliticalaction/.
Has politics ever come up in conversations related to your job? Maybe you have heard calls to action, requests for donations, or pleas to support a particular candidate.
Well, few NJEA members express an automatic interest and enthusiasm for political action.
The fact is, whether we like it or not, politics play a major role in our personal and professional lives. Elected and appointed officials make decisions about everything from NJEA members’ salaries and health benefits to privatization of school services and pensions.
If you have ever thought about learning more, we created this event for you to connect with your peers across the state. More details are below:
Date: Wednesday, October 26.
Time: 5:30 dinner; 6:00 start with dinner left out until 6:30 in case you are running late. End time at approximately 8:00 PM.
Location: Princeton Mariott at Forestal (100 College Road East; Princeton, NJ 08540. Parking is easy!).
Who’s invited? Members of NJEA’s early career member network and all 71 NJEA members under the age of 40 who currently hold public office in NJ.
Agenda: This event will be hosted by NJEA members and will be light on presentations but heavy on conversations. After dinner, we’ll host a World Cafe with the group. It is our hope that you leave with a bigger support network and a deeper understanding of how politics impacts your job and what you can do to have an impact.
RSVP: Email NJEA field representative Jim Boice at firstname.lastname@example.org.

“On behalf of the NJEA Summer Fellowship program, we invite YOU to rally with us tomorrow, Monday, Aug. 8 on the steps of the State House in Trenton (125 W State St, Trenton, NJ 08608) at 11 a.m.
We have been reaching out to NJEA members for several weeks this summer and YOU have done a great job contacting NJ legislators. We need one more GIANT push tomorrow. The purpose of our rally is to let Senator Sweeney and the rest of the legislators know that WE STAND STRONG IN SOLIDARITY and we WILL NOT FORGET his promise to post SCR-2!! August 8th is the LAST day SCR-2 can be posted and we, the NJEA, will NOT go quietly!
The voters of NJ should be given the opportunity to cast their vote for the Constitutional Amendment. Steve Sweeney is playing politics with our future and we refuse to stay quiet about it.
We are expecting several hundred NJEA members to attend the rally. Please join us is solidarity. Make sure to wear RED and bring a sign if you can. If not, we will have a table set up to make signs when you get there.
The NJEA Summer Fellows, your fellow NJEA members”

“I would like to take a moment to share how proud I am as a former New Jersey Student Education Association member to have seen student members alongside full time members at the August 1st lobby day advocating for #votenjpension.
Nationwide, there is a strong correlation between active student membership and active full time membership. The opportunities afforded to me as a student member helped me learn how to be a teacher leader and a strong advocate for NJ schools, students, and NJEA members. How lucky are we to have a thriving program of student members here in NJ fostering the future leaders of the NJEA?
And yes — they have a vested interest in this too! Beyond the passion that we all must have to enter the field of education, what would stop these young, bright minds from leaving the field they chose to study and exercising their skills in the private sector if they had no pension? A promise is a promise, and it’s a promise to all who enter our profession, too. #solidarity #leadershipmatters #votenjpension ”
